I’m in a transition right now. I recently moved from Brooklyn to Syracuse and have been really turned upside down. My regular schedule of drawing and creating has disappeared and I have not had time or place to wander the streets taking photos of interesting things like I used to do in Brooklyn or Manhattan. My new position is a lot more creative and I love it but my personal design time has suffered. I hop that within a week everything will be set up in our apartment and I’ll be able to get back to doing my thing. The pictures below are images I took on my last walk through Williamsburg, Brooklyn about a month ago.

Hi Russ,
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun thing to do! New York City is an endless inspiration and gallery. Every time I make a visit to the city I come back with hundreds of photos but frankly speaking not as good as yours.
I would comment on the third bowling image. It sends simple message and provides direction. Simple and practical. The font of the word Bowl is rounded as bowling balls are. It also reminds of the Uncle Sam Needs You message thus inspiring to go and bowl.
Great example of a simple and intriguing design delivering straightforward message.
These are some great images! I love the giant squirrel in particular. There is always going to be the "graffiti vs. art" debate. In the case of the giant squirrel, I would imagine that took far too much time and effort to be a quick defacing of property. I think the last image you post shows more evidence of many hands touching the same canvas, probably quickly, over a long period of time. That would be closer to what people may agree upon as being "graffiti" but it is no less intriguing and interesting. Both pictures capture the personality of a unique city. While the creators of these works may never be well known, it is amazing how many people their art may reach and inspire.
